Planning for growth is something that can feel overwhelming to anyone who wants to grow something. This sense of fear, confusion, and intense urge or passion can cause you to procrastinate in your attempt to satisfy this want for growth. It sounds counterintuitive, but trust me, it took me a long time to realize that the very thing I wanted to happen, I was procrastinating on because the thought of what it might take made me feel overwhelmed.

You don’t have to remain overwhelmed. When the feeling of overwhelm takes over your mind, use this as a trigger to tell yourself, you simply need to write down all the things you think need to get done and if you don’t know how to get that one thing done on your list, write down ways you can find help regarding it. This is the step that people miss when trying to grow — not remembering to condition your mind to set triggers to help you identify feeling overwhelmed.

The same goes for planning change or creating processes that will become systems over time. You will need to condition your mind to think from an overview perspective and then reverse engineer the steps that it will take to get to the bigger picture. Understand that you will have to get good at breaking things down into smaller bite-size or tangible milestones. Tell yourself that this is the skill that you are learning when you sit down to write out your vision. The vision is first and then you reverse engineer it so it can become a reality.

You will not always know how to do something, so it is best you reckon with that fact from now and save yourself the trouble of feeling defeated during the reverse engineering process. It’s easy to write the vision down because it is already inside of you and you can see it abstractly, but when you start to dissect the vision and reverse engineer it, to plan all the goals that will have to be accomplished before the vision is fully manifested in reality, that’s when things get cloudy and cumbersome. So telling yourself that these feelings of frustration and fear will come, is the best thing you can do for yourself before you start your growth journey.

Get good at these 3 things and watch your chances of success increase drastically.

  1. Get good at writing your vision down.

  2. Get good at reverse engineering your vision.

  3. Get good at autonomy.

These things needed to be discussed first before covering planning because too often we jump over the initiation and go right into the planning and implementation stages unprepared for the real show stopper, which is self-preparation. Prepare yourself to feel and expect certain challenges that will come from within. Emotional intelligence is necessary to plan to grow anything. Learning how to train yourself to push through the feeling of disappointment and fear can go a long way. Learning how to clearly articulate your thoughts to a group of people will definitely make things a lot easier when leading teams.

Learn how to plan by starting with the person in the mirror, then seek out like-minded people and delegate clearly what you need accomplished and finally, make sure to always include gratitude. “Thank you so much” can work magic. Show people that you appreciate them.

I know this is not your normal planning guideline, but it behooves all of us to look into these small things and master them because they are the real builders or destroyers of any plan. The same goes for planning events. Start with only 3 events a year and perfect those first, then once you have found your planning sauce, you can start to add more events to your yearly calendar.
